Heating System Applications
How Multitubo MLCP and Ferroguard support radiator connections, radiant heating, oxygen-tight closed loops, and magnetite protection.
Heating systems place demanding requirements on pipe materials: elevated operating temperatures, cyclic thermal expansion, oxygen ingress control, and long-term corrosion resistance in closed loops. Multitubo's multilayer composite pipe (MLCP) and Ferroguard magnetite separator are engineered as complementary components — the pipe delivers oxygen-tight, corrosion-resistant distribution, while Ferroguard protects pumps, valves, and heat exchangers from magnetite contamination.
Radiator Connections and Distribution
MLCP is widely specified for radiator connection networks in residential and commercial buildings. Its five-layer composite structure combines PE-RT Type II inner and outer layers with a central aluminum barrier, delivering form stability during bending and routing through walls, ceilings, and riser shafts.
Compared with rigid metal pipe, MLCP requires fewer fittings on curved runs, reducing potential leak points and installation time. Press-fit connections — available in METAL, PPSU, and G2 variants — create permanent joints without open flame, making them suitable for occupied buildings and phased renovation work.
- Size range from 16 to 110 mm covers single-family dwellings through commercial risers.
- Low thermal expansion behaviour comparable to copper reduces stress on brackets and connections.
- Smooth polymer inner surfaces resist scaling and deposit formation over the product life.
Radiant Heating and Cooling
Underfloor and ceiling radiant systems benefit from MLCP's flexibility and dimensional stability. The pipe holds its routed shape without spring-back, simplifying manifold connections and loop layouts in screed or panel systems.
For combined heating and cooling applications, the oxygen-tight aluminum layer is critical. By preventing atmospheric oxygen from entering the closed circuit, MLCP inhibits internal corrosion of ferrous components — a common failure mode in mixed-metal heating systems where oxygen ingress accelerates rust formation and sludge accumulation.
Oxygen Tightness and Corrosion Prevention
The aluminum layer in Multitubo MLCP acts as an effective oxygen diffusion barrier. In closed heating loops, this barrier limits the supply of dissolved oxygen that would otherwise react with steel radiators, pump housings, and valve bodies.
This protection is particularly important in modern low-temperature systems and heat pump installations, where extended operating lifetimes and minimal maintenance are design priorities. The inert PE-RT inner surface further ensures that water chemistry remains stable and that corrosion products do not accumulate on pipe walls.
Ferroguard for Magnetite in Closed Loops
Even in well-designed closed systems, magnetite (black iron oxide) can form through corrosion processes and mechanical wear. Magnetite particles circulate with the heating medium, causing abrasive damage to pump seals, blocking valve seats, and reducing heat transfer efficiency at heat exchangers.
The Multitubo Ferroguard magnetite separator addresses this challenge with a compact, in-line design:
- Patented service handle enables dry magnetite removal during system operation — no flushing or refilling required.
- 360° installation flexibility accommodates tight plant room layouts.
- Highest magnetic capture efficiency in the 50 mm compact separator class protects downstream components.
- Compatible with standard 130 mm circulation pumps without pipe cutting on many installations.
Specifying MLCP together with Ferroguard creates a comprehensive heating system strategy: oxygen-tight distribution piping plus active magnetite management at the plant level.
